Dean's Research Awards
The Faculty Plan states that the Faculty will allocate an annual sum of money that will be available to faculty members in small amounts on a competitive basis to enable them to develop research projects. We are pleased to invite Faculty members to apply for the 2012 Dean's Research Awards before 15 May 2012.
General Criteria:
- One round annually
- Since Arts members in the federated colleges have access to similar research funds in their home institutions, they are not eligible to apply
- A request to the Dean's Research Fund will only be considered once every three (3) years
- Adjudicating commitee: elected subcommittee of RAGS (3 persons plus Associate Dean ex officio)
2012-13 Competition:
- Amount available (to be reviewed annually): $28,000.00
- Deadline for applications: 15 May 2012
- Maximum award under normal circumstances: $3,500.00
- $8,000 total will be reserved in the first instance as a special fund for Arts researchers who received "4A" status in the most recent SSHRC Standard Research Grants competition, as well as researchers who have achieved a ranking of 3.3 or higher in an CIHR competition. NSERC applications will be considered in this category based on reviewers' comments
Application Procedures:
- Applicants should provide a clear description of and budget justification for the proposed research, including the following:
- a clear and detailed articulation of the research plan to be undertaken
- a detailed outline of the work to be undertaken, with time-lines
- a clear methodological approach
- rationales for expenditures for travel, equipment and other materials
- explanations of how many student assistants will be hired (if any, what specific work they will be asked to perform, how many hours they will be required to work and at what rate of pay
- a listing of confirmed and potential community partners, if pertinent
- a projection of how this work will relate to future projects and applications
- an expression of anticipated research outcomes
- A current CV must accompany the application

Criteria For Consideration of Applications:
- Clear research project plan and objectives; academic merit of the proposal
- Fit with university strategic plan: the proposal reflects the University's strategic plan goals
- The applicant's record of research accomplishments and ability to carry out the proposed research
- Justification of the budget in relation to the proposal: detailed, eligible budget items outlined in the request
- The potential of the award to be a catalyst for external funding
- In cases of subsequent applications, the applicant must show evidence of impact of previous funding received
Priority of requests:
1) Seed funding for new projects
2) Continuing Projects
Funding Guidelines:
- The use of funds must be consistent with the expenditures permitted under Tri-Council Funding (with the exception of computers and computer equipment.)
- Awards are intended to support research projects not the dissemination of their results at academic conferences
- Award cannot be used to buy out teaching
Reporting Procedures:
- A brief written report detailing research progress and expenditure of funds is required upon completion of the project, but no later than three years after the funds were awarded
- Applications from previous recipients of Dean's Research Awards will not be considered until a report has been received
